Much is proud to announce that Rebecca Kanter and Ian Shaffer have been promoted to principal. Kanter, an attorney in the Corporate & Finance group, and Shaffer, an attorney in the Real Estate group, will contribute fresh thinking and dynamic perspectives as they elevate the firm’s next generation of leadership on two fast-moving transactional teams.
“This milestone in Rebecca’s and Ian’s careers reflects years of hard work and a proven commitment to being people our clients and colleagues can count on,” said Managing Partner Courtney Mayster. “In addition to their collaborative, people-first mindsets, they have fantastic client relationships, helping ensure Much is positioned for success for years to come.”
In her practice, Kanter focuses on mergers and acquisitions, business counseling, and equity offerings. She serves private equity firms, privately held companies, and family offices across the infrastructure, insurance, consumer packaged goods (CPGs), and hospitality and restaurant industries. Kanter is a versatile, go-to resource for Much’s attorneys and clients, advising on every step of M&A transactions while also addressing everyday business needs in her role as corporate counsel.
“Since starting my career in Much’s apprentice program, I’ve had the privilege of growing my practice with the support of a team that values an entrepreneurial mindset and exceptional client service,” Kanter said. “As a principal, I’m focused on paying that forward by investing in people, creating meaningful opportunities for others to lead, and strengthening both our business and our culture.”
Shaffer represents the full range of real estate players, including buyers, sellers, investors, owners, landlords, tenants, lending institutions, and real estate investment trusts (REITS) on commercial transactions. Clients call on him to advise on acquisitions, dispositions, and debt and equity financings, as well as development, construction, and leasing matters. With substantial experience on the lending side of commercial real estate transactions, Shaffer regularly guides banks, financial institutions, and private lenders on loan structuring, negotiation, and documentation.
“I am proud to be part of a group grounded in sincere client relationships and a team-oriented approach to real estate work. As a native Chicagoan, it’s a genuine privilege to work alongside people who understand the blueprint of our city so well,” Shaffer said. “Stepping into Much’s partnership reflects the trust and support of my colleagues. I look forward to building on that foundation with teammates who raise the bar every day.”
