Much Shelist successfully negotiated a 15-year lease on behalf of its client, 233 S. Wacker Drive LLC, for law firm Seyfarth Shaw to move its Chicago offices to 200,000 square feet of space at Willis Tower. This deal brings Much Shelist’s total commercial leasing activity to more than one million square feet of space throughout the country in the past year. It also brings total leasing in the iconic Willis Tower to approximately 93 percent.

“We are extremely proud of this milestone achieved in just 12 months’ time,” said Harold S. Dembo, Co-Chair of the firm’s Real Estate practice group. “Our ability to support the turnaround taking place in the real estate industry – especially on deals of this size and prominence, and both in Chicago and nationally – reflects the exceptional knowledge and experience our real estate attorneys have to offer.”

Much Shelist also represented the same client in a 15-year extension of the Willis Tower lease for 125,000 square feet of new space for law firm Dentons, one of the building’s longest-standing and largest tenants.

Highlights of other lease activity handled by the firm within the last 12 months include:

  • Leasing 182,000 square feet of the former Sears retail space at 1 N. Dearborn Street to the Chicago Board of Education for its new headquarters;

  • Negotiating 12 store leases for Mariano’s grocery chain (many of which replaced the exiting Dominick’s stores);

  • 231,000 square feet of retail leases at the Maxwell project in the South Loop, including Nordstrom Rack, Dick’s Sporting Goods, T.J. Maxx and Burlington Coat Factory;

  • Negotiating more than a dozen commercial leases for client BE Aerospace;

  • Completing Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises restaurant leases in locations around the country, primarily Illinois, Arizona and Maryland; and

  • More than 500,000 square feet of office and industrial leasing throughout the country on behalf of ORIX Corporation.

Much Shelist has one of the largest groups focused on real estate among midsize Chicago-based law firms. With 25 attorneys, the group represents both landlords and tenants in matters of all sizes and types, and in all areas of real estate, including retail, office, industrial and multi-family residential developments.
